यह कहानी उस समय की है जब भगवान श्रीराम की सेना रामसेतु (समुद्र पर पुल) बना रही थी। हनुमान जी भी इसमें लगे थे, लेकिन एक समय वे ध्यान में बैठे थे – प्रभु श्रीराम का स्मरण कर रहे थे।
शनिदेव का आगमन:
इसी दौरान शनिदेव वहाँ आए। वे अपने बल और प्रभाव पर बहुत घमण्ड कर रहे थे। उन्हें लगा कि कोई भी उनके प्रभाव से नहीं बच सकता। तभी उन्होंने ध्यानमग्न हनुमान जी को देखा और सोचा कि क्यों न इनसे युद्ध किया जाए।
युद्ध की ज़िद:
शनिदेव ने हनुमान जी को युद्ध के लिए ललकारा। लेकिन हनुमान जी शांत भाव से बोले कि वे प्रभु श्रीराम के ध्यान में हैं और युद्ध नहीं करना चाहते। लेकिन शनिदेव नहीं माने, और जबरन उन्हें युद्ध के लिए खींचने लगे।
हनुमान जी का उत्तर:
हनुमान जी ने अपनी पूँछ बढ़ा कर शनिदेव को उसमें लपेट दिया। फिर उन्हें लेकर रामसेतु की परिक्रमा करने लगे। हनुमान जी जान-बूझकर पूँछ को पत्थरों से टकराते रहे, जिससे शनिदेव को बहुत कष्ट हुआ।
शनिदेव की क्षमा याचना:
बहुत पीड़ा के बाद शनिदेव ने हाथ जोड़कर हनुमान जी से माफ़ी माँगी। तब हनुमान जी ने शर्त रखी:
“आप मेरे भक्तों को कभी पीड़ा नहीं देंगे, तभी मैं आपको छोड़ूँगा।”
शनिदेव ने वचन दिया कि वे हनुमान जी के भक्तों को कष्ट नहीं देंगे।
तेल चढ़ाने की परंपरा:
मुक्त होने के बाद शनिदेव ने दर्द से राहत पाने के लिए तेल माँगा। हनुमान जी ने उन्हें तेल दिया। तभी से मान्यता है कि शनिदेव को तेल चढ़ाने से कष्ट कम होते हैं।
सीख क्या मिलती है?
- भक्ति और विनम्रता की ताकत – हनुमान जी शांत और भक्तिपूर्ण थे, फिर भी जब धर्म की रक्षा करनी पड़ी, तो शक्तिशाली रूप में सामने आए।
- अहंकार का अंत निश्चित है – शनिदेव जैसे शक्तिशाली देवता भी जब घमंड में आए, तो उन्हें दण्ड मिला।
- सच्चे भक्त की रक्षा स्वयं भगवान करते हैं।
- हनुमान जी की पूजा से शनि के दोष कम होते हैं।
इसलिए…
हर शनिवार को लोग हनुमान जी की पूजा करते हैं और शनिदेव को तेल चढ़ाते हैं, ताकि जीवन में शांति और समृद्धि बनी रहे।

Lord Hanuman is symbol of devotion, strength, and humility, while Lord Shani (Saturn) is known as the giver of justice and the result of one’s karma. Both are highly respected deities. But there’s a fascinating story where pride met devotion—and Shani Dev had to face the consequences of his arrogance.
The Incident: When Shani Dev Challenged Hanuman
This story dates back to the time when Lord Rama’s army was building the Ram Setu (bridge to Lanka). Lord Hanuman was deeply engaged in this mission. One evening, Hanuman sat quietly near the seashore, meditating on Lord Rama’s name.
At that moment, Shani Dev appeared, strolling proudly along the shore. He was filled with pride about his powers and influence, thinking no one in the universe could withstand his might. Looking around for someone to challenge, his eyes fell on Hanuman.
Shani Dev decided to test his power by provoking Hanuman into a fight.
The Challenge and the Clash
Shani Dev approached Hanuman and said, “I am the powerful Shani Dev. I challenge you to fight me!”
Hanuman politely replied, “O Lord, I am tired and currently immersed in Lord Rama’s remembrance. Please don’t disturb me.”
However, Shani Dev was too arrogant to listen. He insisted again and again. Finally, he forcefully grabbed Hanuman’s hand, trying to pull him into a fight.
Seeing this aggression, Hanuman decided to teach him a lesson.
Hanuman’s Clever Response
Hanuman smiled calmly and wrapped his long tail around Shani Dev, tying him up tightly. Then, with Shani Dev bound in his tail, Hanuman began leaping around the Ram Setu, intentionally smashing his tail (with Shani Dev inside) against the rocks.
Shani Dev was in terrible pain—his body bruised and bleeding. Helpless and defeated, he cried out in agony, begging for mercy.
Shani Dev’s Apology and Hanuman’s Condition
Shani Dev folded his hands and said,
“O merciful Hanuman! Please forgive me. I now realize my mistake. Free me from this punishment.”
Hanuman replied,
“I will let you go, only if you promise never to trouble my devotees.”
Shani Dev agreed and took a vow that he would not harm Hanuman’s devotees. Only then did Hanuman release him.
Why We Offer Oil to Shani Dev
After being released, Shani Dev’s body was badly hurt. He asked Hanuman for some oil to soothe his wounds. Hanuman gave him oil, and it brought him relief.
Since then, it is believed that offering oil to Shani Dev reduces his harmful effects and brings his blessings. That’s why people, especially on Saturdays, offer mustard or sesame oil to Shani Dev and also worship Lord Hanuman to stay protected from troubles.
